Today, we are happy to launch one of the most requested Google Docs features — the ability to share folders. Shared folders make it easy for a team of people to collaborate on projects that require multiple documents, spreadsheets or presentations. If you have a group of items you want to share, all that you have to do is put them into one folder and share it.

Once you’ve shared a folder, all of the items in the folder will be accessible to the group. You can also add someone to an existing shared folder to give them access to all of the folder’s content. Likewise, each item you add to the folder will be automatically shared. Just like with sharing documents, you can specify edit and view-only access for a folder.

In addition to sharing folders, you can now upload multiple files to Google Docs at the same time, simplifying the process of transferring documents from your desktop to the cloud. Once your documents are in the cloud, you can access them from any device connected to the Internet or share them with people you choose.

These features are currently rolling out and will be available to everyone by the end of the day. If you’re interested in learning more, check out our post on the Google Docs blog.

Buzz lets you share updates, photos, links, and pretty much anything else you’d like with your Gmail contacts; it’s an easy way to follow your friends, too. When you click Buzz in your Gmail account, you’ll see the stream of posts from people you’re following, and a box for you to post your updates. Here’s a run-down of the basic functions:

Post some buzz: Click in the text box next to your name, and share what’s on your mind.

Comment: if you see something in your stream you’d like to comment on, just click the Comment link under that post. Your comment will appear alongside it, and the author of the post will be notified.

Like/unlike: If you don’t have something in particular you want to say, but you just happen to like someone’s post, you can click Like. It will show up on that post that you liked it; if you have a change of heart about something you’ve liked, you’ll see an Unlike link; just click it to remove your name.

Reply by chat: Click this link if you’d like to send a Chat message to the author of an update

Delete comments: You can delete comments people have posted to your buzz, or comments you’ve posted.

@replies: Write @ in front of someone’s username as a way of directing your buzz at that person (it will automatically go to their inbox).

Mute: You can mute buzz that appears in your inbox by enabling keyboard shortcuts and pressing the ‘m’ key while you’re reading it. Muting keeps the update from continuing to appear in your inbox as people reply to it.

Link to: Click the down-arrow to the right of a post, and select Link to this buzz. This allows you to send a link to this content

Email: Click the down-arrow to the right of a post, and select Email; a new Gmail message will open with the buzz content in the subject and message body.

Earlier today, Google added new features to the Google Doc Tools:

Thumbnail view in the Docs List which allows you to preview your Docs.

Spelling correction when searching for a doc.

Upload any file limit increased from 250MB to 1GB.

Editions Included:
Standard, Premier, Education, Team and Partner Editions

Languages Included:
All languages supported by Google Docs

While the standard “list view” displays the item title and information like sharing state, the thumbnail view displays small previews of your files. We generate thumbnails for all Google Docs types and most common files (photos, PDFs, etc). You can toggle between the two using new buttons on the top right of the toolbar.

When combined with search by relevance, the thumbnail view makes it really easy to find the file you’re looking for.

And for all us spelling-challenged and typo-prone folks, we added spelling correction in search. Never again will you need to wonder how your search for “agedna” (agenda) came up with zero results.

Finally, Google recently finished rolling out the upload and store any file feature, so everyone should now be able to upload, store, and share any file in Google Docs. Google has also increased the maximum file size based on user feedback, so you can now uploads files up to 1 GB in size. Very nice!

On the internet, few companies receive more attention than Google. And for good reason: Google touches so many individuals and businesses. From search to its ‘side projects’, just about everything Google does creates interest.

Google’s prominence, not surprisingly, has led to the creation of many myths. Here are my top five.

If you buy or sell links, Google will punish you. If Google catches you buying or selling links, it might punish you. But the more I see, the more I believe the chances of that happening are slim to none. In my opinion, if you get smacked down by Google for paid links, you can look on the bright side: you’re bound to win the lottery next.

If you cloak, Google will punish you. As with paid links, everything I’ve seen tells me that Google isn’t very good at detecting cloaking either. Obviously, I’m not recommending that you go out and cloak, because, except in specific situations, I don’t think it provides much benefit, and I’d expect ridiculously abusive (and poorly-implemented) cloaking to have far greater risk.

Google = PageRank. PageRank is important but there are a few caveats. First, it’s important to note that the PageRank you see in your Google toolbar is not the ‘real‘ PageRank. And second, while the ‘real‘ PageRank that you can’t see is important, it’s not the only thing Google is looking at. So if you’re measuring your SEO efforts by the PageRank you see in your toolbar and not your actual performance in the SERPs, you’re missing the point.

Google will save [insert industry]. From the agency to newspapers, if you had $1 for every industry Google was supposed to save, you’d probably have a few hundred dollars by now. While I think it’s true that Google has the potential to help certain companies and industries that have struggled, the track record is clear: Google is no industry’s knight in shining armor.

Google has a plan. A lot of observers seem to believe that Google has some sort of grand plan. That every project somehow ties into something larger. It’s the tech industry equivalent of the Grand Unified Theory. In reality, however, it’s pretty clear that Google doesn’t really have a plan as much as it has a strategy of trying lots of things and seeing what sticks. Right now, this strategy hasn’t really paid off, as the company’s primary cash cow (paid search) is really its only cash cow. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t call the strategy smart, even if it’s not elegant.

On the SEO side of things, I mention Google’s relative inability to detect paid links and cloaking not as encouragement to engage in these tactics (which are hopefully unnecessary for you in the first place) or as an insult to Google, but rather as a demonstration of something that should be made more obvious: both Google and uber-SEOs have every incentive to spread myths about Google’s capabilities. After all, if fewer people believed that paid links, for instance, were likely to result in a Google ban, more people would use them. And that wouldn’t be good for those who are profiting from the top SERPs they’ve obtained using paid links.

On the business side of things, Google is one of the most incredible companies in the past century. That doesn’t, however, mean that it’s capable of superhuman feats or that it has everything figured out. Which, when you think about it, is probably all the better.
